Don’t Let Your Dog Take Charge

Don’t Let Your Dog Take Charge

Dogs thrive on structure. In every pack, someone leads — and if you don’t provide that leadership, your dog may try to step into that role. While it might seem harmless at first, letting your dog make the rules can quickly lead to pushy or demanding behavior.

Your role as an owner is to provide calm leadership, clear structure, and consistent guidance. This doesn’t mean being harsh — it means showing your dog what’s expected in a way that helps them feel secure and balanced. When your dog knows you’re in charge, they can relax and just be a dog.

Here are a few simple ways to set the tone:

1. You Set the Routine
Feed your family first, then feed your dog. Dogs naturally take cues from routines — by controlling mealtimes, you reinforce that you set the order of events in your home.

2. Greet People First, Then the Dog
When you walk in the door, say hello to your family or guests first, then call your dog once they’re calm. This teaches your pup patience and helps them understand that attention is given on your terms, not theirs.

3. You Control the Walk
Walks should start when you’re ready. If your dog pushes to go out right away, guide them back to their bed or crate for a few minutes before heading outside. Bathroom breaks should be structured too — consistent times and places make training easier and reduce accidents.

4. Training Builds Respect
Early training sets the foundation for a lifetime of good habits. Practicing commands, rewarding calm behavior, and reinforcing boundaries all strengthen your dog’s respect for your leadership.

👉 Dogs don’t need you to be a bully — they need you to be a leader. By providing structure and guidance, you’ll create a calmer, more respectful, and happier relationship with your furry friend.
